Our personal recommendations for the best accommodation options in Puebla, MexicoPuebla is colonial cool

What’s the best area to stay in Puebla?
We think the centro histórico is the best area to stay in Puebla, hands down.
Staying here, you’ll have the cathedral, the Zócalo and some of the city’s best restaurants serving traditional Poblano cuisine right on your doorstep.
You’ll most likely also feel very safe walking to and from your accommodation, even at night.
We stayed on Avenida 4 just a few hundred metres from the historic centre ourselves.
While our experience was fine, we would have honestly preferred to stay on the other side of the huge Boulevard Héroes del 5 de Mayo inside the city centre to be closer to everything.
That’s why we’ve picked hotels inside the historic city centre – from luxury stays to more budget-friendly ones – for you to consider for your stay.

The best luxury hotels in Puebla
Puebla’s historic centre is home to some truly exceptional stays, where colonial grandeur meets contemporary elegance.
The city’s rich cultural heritage (and growing tourism industry) have attracted world-class hoteliers who have transformed historic mansions and buildings into lavish retreats.
With exceptional service and indulgent amenities, these three hotels each provide the perfect base for wandering Puebla’s streets by day and unwinding in refined surroundings by night.
- Hotel Boutique Casona de la China Poblana (adults only) – A historic 17th-century mansion once home to the legendary China Poblana, now an intimate luxury hotel in the heart of Puebla.
- Cartesiano Boutique & Wellness Hotel – This beautiful colonial property features 400-year-old walls, Mexican art throughout and a stunning rooftop pool with volcano views.
- Banyan Tree Puebla – Asian-inspired luxury meets colonial Mexican architecture, featuring spacious suites and a world-class spa in a prime downtown location.

Hotel Boutique Casona de la China Poblana (adults only)
This extraordinary boutique hotel occupies the actual former residence of Catarina de San Juan, the legendary “China Poblana”. Born to a noble family in India, she eventually settled in Puebla, where she became beloved by locals and later revered as a saint.
Today, her colonial home offers just ten individually named guest rooms, each preserving the property’s historical charm.
We love the colonial architecture with soaring ceilings and beautiful original woodwork that’s been thoughtfully modernised.
The little touches really stand out: 24-hour coffee and cookies available in the hallways, complimentary fruit baskets in the rooms and a delicious included breakfast served in the courtyard, sometimes accompanied by live music.
The location couldn’t be better for exploring Puebla on foot. The cathedral and the Zócalo are just minutes away.

Cartesiano Boutique & Wellness Hotel
We were immediately impressed by this striking property when walking past it from our accommodation into the city centre.
The hotel sits on one of Puebla’s most beautiful streets, lined with vibrantly coloured colonial buildings.
Cartesiano Boutique Hotel has transformed a historic mansion and former tile factory into a stunning retreat.
You can still see the 400-year-old walls throughout the property, and they’ve cleverly incorporated reclaimed Talavera tiles into fountains and design elements. The Mexican art touches are everywhere.
The rooftop is definitely the highlight here with the blue-tiled swimming pool offering gorgeous views of Puebla’s cathedral and church towers. On clear days, you can even spot the Popocatépetl volcano in the distance!
When you need a quiet moment, there’s a cosy library filled with books, chess sets and local ceramics – perfect for unwinding after exploring the city.

Banyan Tree Puebla
If you’re familiar with the Banyan Tree brand, you’ll know they do luxury really well.
Thankfully, their Puebla property doesn’t disappoint, managing to seamlessly blend their signature Asian-inspired style with colonial Mexican architecture.
The suites here are super spacious with high ceilings, handcrafted furniture and beds so comfortable you might struggle to get up for sightseeing (at least that’s what we hear!).
Some rooms even have private terraces where you can enjoy your morning coffee.
After a day of wandering Puebla’s cobblestone streets, there’s nothing better than retreating to the rooftop pool or grabbing a creative cocktail while watching the sunset over the city’s domes and spires.
Also, don’t miss the spa.
An important note: Unlike the other hotels on this list, Banyan Tree Puebla is not located directly in the centro histórico. While it’s not ideal to walk the ~10 minutes along a busy stretch of road, we still thought this luxury option was worth mentioning. And you can always take a cab if needed.

Like many of Mexico’s larger cities, Puebla offers excellent mid-range hotel options that balance comfort, character and location without the luxury price tag.
In other words, good value for money without compromising on quality or convenience.
These three well-positioned hotels give you more flexibility to spend on Puebla’s amazing food scene and cultural experiences while still enjoying comfortable, characterful accommodation in the historic centre.
- L’Hotel Perla Boutique – A stylish option in a restored building with bright, modern rooms and a picturesque rooftop terrace with a heated pool.

L’Hotel Perla Boutique
Located right on the iconic Plazuela de los Sapos (Frog Square, aka Alley of the Frogs), this stylish boutique hotel occupies a beautifully restored building that blends into the historic and very colourful surroundings while offering contemporary comforts inside.
The rooms feature smart technology like automated temperature and lighting controls as well as smart mirrors – touches we’d expect in pricier accommodations.
The standout feature has to be the rooftop area with a heated pool and jacuzzi, where you can relax and enjoy views across Puebla’s historic centre. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

Hotel Boutique Posada XVII
This intimate 7-room hotel occupies a mid-17th century house that has been lovingly updated while retaining its historical character. The place is filled with period furniture and antiques, including a small chapel.
There’s also a rooftop where you can be lucky and catch views of the mighty Popocatépetl volcano.
The rooms are surprisingly spacious, with all the essentials plus some nice touches like streaming services. Some rooms also include balconies or terraces.
Many guests rave about the exceptionally friendly and helpful staff who go above and beyond to make stays memorable.
The central location places you just a short walk from the Zócalo, markets and museums.
One quirk to note: the hotel is located across from Puebla’s famous Lucha Libre wrestling arena, which hosts events on Monday nights until about 11 pm. Light sleepers might want earplugs, or better yet, catch the spectacle for themselves!

Palacio Julio Hotel
This beautifully restored property combines two 17th-century palace houses in the heart of Puebla’s centro histórico. The careful restoration has preserved the buildings’ colonial splendour while adding modern comforts (quite a theme in Puebla!).

Hotel Isabel
This welcoming budget hotel sits just a block from Puebla’s main square, offering clean rooms at prices that leave plenty in your wallet for exploring.
Just note that while most rooms are comfortable, a few lack windows. The central location also means it’s not the quietest place to rest your head in Puebla.

How long should you stay in Puebla?
The ideal length of stay in Puebla naturally depends on your interests and how much time you have for your Mexico itinerary. But rushing it would be a shame.
We think that three to four days is enough time for most people to experience Puebla.
We chose to stay five days (four nights), which felt just right for exploring the city at a comfortable pace without rushing through attractions.
How to spend 3-5 days in Puebla:
- Explore Puebla’s centro histórico thoroughly, including the magnificent Puebla Cathedral, the golden Rosario Chapel and the Biblioteca Palafoxiana.

- Wander through charming areas like the Artist Quarter and the colourful Alley of the Frogs.
- Browse traditional crafts at the Parian Market and sample local treats on the Street of Sweets.

With a longer stay, you could also:
- Explore more off-the-beaten-path neighbourhoods.
- Visit additional churches and historical sites.
- Take your time discovering all the street art scattered throughout the city.

Is one or two days enough for experiencing Puebla?
If you’re short on time, you could see Puebla’s main highlights in just one or two days, but you’d miss the relaxed atmosphere and some of the many gems that make the city so special.

Map of the best things to do in Puebla
Here’s a map we’ve created showing all of the top attractions in the city mentioned in our full travel guide to Puebla.
As you can see, almost all of the highlights are clustered in the centro histórico.
How to get around in Puebla
Walking around Puebla is best for getting around the city centre, but there are of course also options for both public and private transport.
Walking
The historic centre of Puebla is compact and pedestrian-friendly, making it ideal for walking.
We walked everywhere. Many attractions, restaurants and shops are within easy walking distance of each other.

Public transport
Puebla has a public transport system called RUTA that covers the city.
The bus system is also called the Metrobus. It’s a popular way for people to get around, so the busses are often packed.
It’s inexpensive but may not always be the most convenient as routes can be confusing, especially to non-Spanish speakers.
Uber, Cabify, taxi or the like
Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are everywhere in Puebla City, and we used them ourselves to get home at night or to go to Cholula.
We primarily used ride-shares and found them both affordable and safe. One of the things we appreciated most was knowing the price upfront, rather than having to haggle with a taxi driver or be surprised by the fare at the end of the trip.

When to visit Puebla
Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,135 meters above sea level (7,005 feet), Puebla enjoys a temperate climate throughout the year.
The weather in Puebla is generally mild, with daytime temperatures ranging between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Evenings and nights can be cooler, particularly in the winter months, with temperatures sometimes dropping close to freezing.
Puebla’s rainy season lasts from June to October, bringing afternoon showers or thunderstorms. It’s a good idea to pack a light rain jacket or umbrella during this period.
The dry season, from November to May, is characterised by lower humidity and minimal rainfall. This is the best time to visit if you prefer sunny, dry weather, though it’s worth noting that temperatures can drop significantly at night during the winter months.
Given Puebla’s high altitude, the sun can be quite strong, even on cooler days. It’s important to wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses when exploring outdoor attractions.

Our top tips for visiting Puebla
- Bring your pesos: Some restaurants and most market stalls only take cash.
- ¿Habla inglés? While many people in tourist areas speak some English in Mexico, learning a few basic Spanish phrases can be helpful and appreciated.
- Use Google Translate: If you have data on your phone, you can use the camera function to translate things like menus and signs live. The microphone function is useful if you’re communicating with locals who can’t speak English.
- Wifi and SIM Cards: Wifi is widely available in hotels and restaurants but speeds can vary. Consider getting a local SIM card or an international data plan if you want to stay connected on the go. We used Holafly eSIM and it worked well. We’ve also previously used Airalo (adlink) with great success.
- Respect local customs: Although Puebla is a rather progressive city, Mexico still has many traditional cultural practices; be mindful and respectful of local customs and traditions.
- Tipping: It’s common to leave a 10-15% tip at restaurants or for group tours if a service charge hasn’t already been applied. For taxis, tipping isn’t mandatory, but rounding up the fare is customary. Ride-share drivers generally appreciate a tip of around 10%.
- Layer up: At 2,135 metres above sea level, Puebla can be warm during the day and cooler in the evenings, so bring layers to stay comfortable.
- Stay hydrated: The high altitude can lead to quicker dehydration. Carry a water bottle and drink regularly, especially when walking or during warmer months.
- Don’t drink tap water: Tap water isn’t considered safe to drink in Mexico, so it’s best to stick with bottled water or use a filtered water bottle.
- Plug type and voltage: Mexico primarily uses Type A and Type B plugs (flat, parallel prongs), similar to those used in the United States and Canada. Mexico operates on a 127V supply voltage and a frequency of 60Hz, so check if your devices are dual-voltage if they come from regions with different standards.
