Eutin Travel Guide: 10 Best Things To Do & See in the Cultural Heart of Holstein
Everything you need to know about Eutin including what to do, when to visit and where to stayThe Town of Roses
From the moment we stepped foot in Eutin, a certain calm settled over us.
Granted, it did help that we overlooked the waters of Lake Eutin (Großer Eutiner See) with a view of the beautiful Eutin Castle from our hotel SeeLoge Eutin (adlink).
But it certainly only got better when we walked up to the castle and its gardens after dinner before finding our way back home via the town’s quaint cobbled streets.
Early next morning, the shimmer of the lake invited Alex for a run, before we biked to and around Lake Keller (Kellersee) together on shaded forest paths past hidden swimming spots.
We didn’t notice it immediately, but all the while a subtle smell of flowers had been lingering in the air, adding to the romantic atmosphere. Soon thereafter we learned that Eutin is called “The Town of Roses” (Rosenstadt) and that it’s known for proudly being the home to its very own rose variety. Pretty cool!
We can only say that falling in love with Eutin is easy – but leaving its lakeside shores is difficult.
In this travel guide, we will do our best in helping you create your own happy memories from a trip to Eutin with an overview of all the best things to do, where to stay, how to get around, when to visit and much more.

Why visit Eutin
Despite its small size, tourists have been drawn to Eutin for a long time.
The most obvious highlight of Eutin aka “the cultural heart of Holstein” is the grand Eutin Castle and its gardens located right next to both the Old Town and Lake Eutin.
From here you can venture further into the hilly countryside (so hilly, in fact, that this part of Germany is called “Holstein Switzerland”!), where you can easily access forested hikes, scenic bike trails or paddling on tranquil waters – all directly from the lakeside promenade in Eutin.
If you like to combine culture and history with outdoor activities in nature, Eutin has a unique way of seamlessly blending both in a charming, accessible package.
5 reasons to visit Eutin:
- Rich history: Eutin, with a history spanning over a millennium, invites you to walk its cobbled streets and admire its centuries-old half-timbered houses, offering an immersive journey into the past.
- Eutin Castle: Go directly from the cobbled streets into the opulent world of Eutin Castle, now a museum, where guided tours unravel tales of aristocracy and learn about the town’s storied heritage. Walk through the enchanting castle gardens for an added touch of splendour.

1. Eutin Castle (Schloss Eutin)
Despite its name, Eutin Castle (Schloss Eutin in German) is actually more like a palace and it is the focal point for cultural life in the city.
The stunning palace, surrounded by a picturesque lake and gardens, is a must-visit in Eutin in our opinion.
It houses the regional museum, showcasing historical artefacts and exhibits related to the town’s past and it’s open for visits in the summer.
Even if you don’t go inside Eutin Castle, it’s definitely worth taking a walk around it and enjoying the lovely landscaped garden.
2. Eutin’s Historical Old Town
We think every visitor to Eutin should take the time to go for a leisurely stroll through the cobbled streets of Eutin’s Old Town (Altstadt in German).
Here you’ll see quite a few charming buildings, quaint shops, cosy cafes and lots of roses.
Experiencing the Old Town is simply the best way to a get real feel for Eutin – before exploring its lovely surroundings.
3. Eutin Market Square (Marktplatz)
The vibrant market square of Eutin is the heart of the town, featuring a lovely fountain and various events and markets throughout the year.
It’s an excellent historic place to soak in the local atmosphere.
Remarkably, Eutin’s market square managed to evade the ravages of World War II bombings, meaning you will still find half-timbered houses and historic buildings here, including the Church of Saint Michael, the town hall, the former court pharmacy and the former widow’s palace.
4. Lake Eutin (Großer Eutiner See)
Enjoy a peaceful promenade along the shores of Großer Eutiner See (meaning The Great Eutin Lake).
Located in the northeastern part of Eutin, you can easily combine a stroll through town with a walk by the big lake.
Eutin Castle is placed by Lake Eutin and from where we stayed at Hotel SeeLoge Eutin (adlink), we had a nice view of both the lake and the castle.
5. Bicycle tour around Kellersee
We cycled all the way around Kellersee from Eutin and can especially recommend the eastern part of the lake where we cycled on a nice path under the treetops.
There you’ll also find a small beach (called Hamburger Strand) that invites you for a swim in the summer.
The trip around the lake is just over 10 kilometres and will take 30-45 minutes to bike for most people on ordinary bicycles. You can, of course, go faster on an e-bike.
6. Hunting Lodge at Lake Uklei (Jagdschlösschen am Ukleisee)
A nice excursion from Eutin is visiting the Hunting Lodge at Lake Uklei (called Jagdschlösschen am Ukleisee in German).
Constructed in 1776 initially for the duchess’s tea gatherings, the building has since transitioned to hosting hunting parties, boating escapades and various excursions. It’s also just very pretty.
It’s located just 10 minutes away by car or about 30 minutes by bike. You can also walk from the centre of Eutin which will take you around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
If you bike around Kellersee, it’s right by the northeastern part.
7. Gut Immenhof
After the bike ride, it was nice to have a lunch stop at Gut Immenhof, located closer to the town of Malente.
The hotel and the area are originally known from a German film series from the 1950s. Even if you don’t know the references, it’s still a nice area to visit.
We ate at the restaurant Melkhus, which is found right next to Kellersee with splendid views from the tables.
Check prices and availability at Hotel Gut Immenhof (adlink).
8. Church of Saint Michael
It’s hard to miss the Church of Saint Michael (St.-Michaelis-Kirche) in Eutin. Located in the Old Town, its tall tower can be seen from many parts of the city.
Whether you’re interested in history or simply seeking a peaceful moment, visiting the Church of Saint Michael is a great way to gain insight into Eutin’s heritage. Don’t miss the wooden cross from the 13th century.
9. Meet the love of your life at the famous Bridegroom’s Oak
Found a few kilometres outside Eutin, the Bridesgroom’s Oak (Bräutigamseiche) is a 500-year-old oak tree with a special history.
Climbing the ladder, you’ll find a hole that has been used as a letterbox for decades. It even has its own post address.
If you’re interested in a pen-friend (or perhaps something more!), it’s possible to send a postcard to the tree at “Bräutigamseiche, Dodauer Forst, 23701 Eutin, Germany”.
And if you visit the tree, you can read the letters sent to it. So cute!
10. Brodtener Steilküste
A little more than 30 minutes of driving southeast from Eutin will take you to Brodtener Steilküste (which translates into “the steep coast of Brodten“) by the Baltic Sea, just before the beach resort of Travemünde.
The steep coast is somewhat reminiscent of Møns Klint in Denmark, and here you can walk along the rocks for a little over four kilometres and enjoy the coastal scenery either from the footpath from above or from the beach below.
We paid a few euros to park at Hermannshöhe Adventure Cafe.

How to get around
By foot or bicycle
Eutin is a relatively compact city, so the best way to get around is to walk or bike.
It’s easy and safe.
Put on some good shoes or hop on a bike to get around for free – and you’ll be sure to see some interesting things along the way, too.
By public transport
We didn’t use public transportation in Eutin ourselves but it should certainly be possible to get almost anywhere with a combination of local trains and buses.
By car
If walking or biking to an attraction will take too much time, getting around Eutin and its surroundings by car is super convenient.
Parking is generally free and easy to find. However, in the case of paid parking, remember to always bring euro coins for the machines as credit cards aren’t accepted everywhere.
How to get to Eutin
By car
It’s generally easy to reach Germany by car from other countries in Europe as there are lots of motorways connected to neighbouring countries.
As soon as you are in Germany, you can get to the Schleswig-Holstein region via Germany’s famous autobahn (motorway).
Be aware that cars on the autobahn generally drive fast – and by fast, we mean up to 200 km/h!
There are several sections with no speed limit at all so it’s important to look thoroughly in the rearview mirror and side mirror before changing lanes and overtaking.
By train
The train network in Germany is large, relatively cheap and very reliable.
There are many connections between most major cities and to get to Schleswig-Holstein, you can, for example, take the train to Hamburg Central Station (Hamburg Hauptbahnhof), Lübeck Central Station (Lübeck Hauptbahnhof), Kiel Central Station (Kiel Hauptbahnhof) or Flensburg Station (Flensburg Bahnhof).
From there, there are usually connecting trains to smaller towns like Eutin.
We have previously used the Deutsche Bahn website to order train tickets.
By plane
To get to Schleswig-Holstein in Germany by plane, you can fly to the big international airport Hamburg Airport (Flughafen Hamburg, shortened to HAM) as well as the smaller Lübeck-Blankensee Airport (also sometimes called Hamburg Lübeck, shortened to LBC) that mostly offers domestic flights.
From there, you can take the train or rent a car.

When to visit Eutin
There is really no bad time to visit Eutin and the state of Schleswig-Holstein, although there are, of course, noticeable differences between the seasons.
But when is the best time to travel to Eutin?
We were there ourselves in August and enjoyed warm, perfect summer days.
Like almost all tourist destinations in the world, it’s smart to plan your trip around the most common holidays and instead visit in shoulder periods (if that’s a possibility for you).
That way you can avoid the biggest crowds and generally get cheaper accommodation and save on car rentals.
If it’s not possible to travel outside the holidays, fortunately, Eutin (and Schleswig-Holstein) doesn’t really get crowded.
Seasons
Spring (March, April and May) is a beautiful time to visit Eutin and Schleswig-Holstein with sunny days and blooming flowers. It can still be a bit chilly, so check the weather forecast before you pack.
Summer (June, July and August) is of course the hottest season and the temperatures can get quite high in July and August. At the same time, it’s also at its rainiest in the summer so pack a rain jacket or an umbrella, just in case. The sun is usually shining from early morning until very late in the evening. The summer holidays in Germany are spread out between mid-June and mid-September.
Autumn (September, October and November) is a wonderful time to visit Northern Germany. The autumn colours paint the landscapes in shades of yellow, orange and red. The most beautiful autumn colours can typically be seen at the end of September and in October, perhaps also at the beginning of November before the leaves fall off the trees.
Winter (December, January and February) is generally cold but on the other hand, there are usually fewer tourists. If you’re planning to visit during Christmas or New Year, it’s smart to book your accommodation ahead of time.
Our best tips for visiting Eutin
- Credit cards can be used in most shops, but as in the rest of Germany, cash is still often used and it’s not unusual for cash to be used in parking and ticket machines, at cafés and the like.
- Get up early to avoid any potential crowds in the high season and enjoy attractions in tranquility.
- Drink tap water. It’s not only good for the planet, it’s also good for your wallet. The tap water in Germany is absolutely safe to drink – so bring a refillable bottle.
- Travel to Eutin outside of the holidays. Accommodation prices are lower, good deals are easier found and there are fewer tourists.
What to bring to Eutin
- Travel insurance (adlink). Never travel without it!
- A good camera – here’s a guide to the gear we use.
- Sunscreen (adlink). Especially if you visit Schleswig-Holstein in the summer. We recommend that you use an organic, vegan sunscreen without oxybenzone and other harmful chemicals.
- Hiking shoes, sneakers or other shoes you can walk in comfortably.
- Swimwear and a towel if you plan to swim in the summer or if you are staying at a hotel with a spa area.
- A refillable water bottle and snacks. You can drink the tap water in Germany.
- Cash for parking and other small purchases, especially 1 and 2-euro coins. Not all places in Germany accept credit cards.
Sustainable travel tips
To travel as sustainably as possible, we recommend the following:
- Bring your own drinking water in a refillable bottle.
- Avoid single-use plastics.
- Dispose of waste properly and do not throw it on the ground.
- Check your sunscreen before going in the water. Many brands contain oxybenzone and other chemicals that can be harmful.
- Take only photos, leave only footprints. Let everything stay in its natural place.
- Respect wildlife.
