Our recommendations for the best eco-friendly places to stay in the Danish capitalEco-friendly places to stay in Copenhagen
We’re from Copenhagen, so we might be a bit biased – but we genuinely believe it’s one of the best cities in the world for eco-conscious travellers.
Denmark takes sustainability seriously, and in Copenhagen, you’ll see that mindset everywhere: from the bikes outnumbering cars to the tap water that’s clean, safe and drinkable.
When it comes to places to stay, there’s no need to compromise.
The city has plenty of sustainable hotels that care just as much about the environment as you do – whether that’s through an organic breakfast buffet, energy-saving technology or full-on carbon-neutral operations.
If you’re looking for accommodation that matches your values without giving up comfort or style, we’ve put together a list of our favourite sustainable hotels in Copenhagen.
First, we’ve sorted them by budget, and further down, you’ll find them grouped by neighbourhood as well.
We hope our guide to eco-friendly hotels in Copenhagen helps you find the best place to stay – one that fits both your trip and your values.

What is a sustainable hotel?
A sustainable hotel is one that actively works to reduce its environmental impact, without compromising on comfort, design or service.
For this guide to the best sustainable hotels in Copenhagen, we’ve looked at hotels that show a real commitment to sustainability.
Some of the features we’ve considered include:
- Energy efficiency and water-saving measures – such as LED lighting, smart heating systems, solar panels, buildings designed to reduce energy use as well as low-flow showers and toilets.
- Eco-certifications – including labels like Green Key and the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.
- Organic, plant-based and locally sourced food – especially in hotel restaurants and breakfast buffets.
- Waste reduction – through recycling, composting and avoiding single-use plastics.
- Carbon-neutral operations – either by offsetting emissions or significantly reducing them at the source.

Sustainable certifications
Below, we’ve described some of the certifications we’ve looked at when assessing the hotels’ sustainability efforts.
While certifications help identify serious efforts, we’ve also considered hotels that go beyond the basics, whether through creative reuse of materials, climate-positive initiatives or transparency about their environmental footprint.
Green Key
The Green Key certification is an international eco-label awarded to tourism businesses that meet strict environmental standards.
It covers everything from energy use and water conservation to waste management, sustainable food choices and environmentally friendly cleaning products.
Certified hotels must also train staff in sustainability practices, involve guests in their efforts and engage with the local community.
Nordic Swan Ecolabel
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is the official environmental certification used across the Nordic countries.
It takes a comprehensive approach, assessing a hotel’s entire environmental impact – from energy and water use to food sourcing, chemicals and waste.
Certified hotels must meet strict requirements, including limits on energy and water consumption, waste reduction, responsible procurement and the use of eco-labelled products.
Staff training, food-waste prevention and biodiversity initiatives are also part of the criteria.
The Organic Cuisine Label
The Organic Cuisine Label (Det Økologiske Spisemærke) is a state-controlled certification in Denmark that shows how much of a restaurant’s food is organic.
There are three levels: bronze (30-60%), silver (60-90%) and gold (90-100%).
Only gold-certified places can call themselves fully organic.
The label is backed by regular inspections and documentation, making it a reliable way to identify kitchens with a clear commitment to organic ingredients.
B Corp
B Corp certification is a global standard for companies that meet high social and environmental performance.
For hotels, it covers everything from workers’ rights and community involvement to energy use, sourcing and waste.
Certified hotels are legally required to balance profit with purpose and are assessed regularly to stay transparent and accountable.
Green Globe
Green Globe is an international certification for sustainable tourism businesses.
Hotels are assessed against over 40 criteria covering environmental, social and economic performance – including energy efficiency, waste reduction, local community support and staff training.
Certification requires independent audits and continuous improvement year after year.
DGNB
DGNB is a German sustainability certification used across Europe, including here in Denmark.
Unlike most hotel labels, DGNB focuses on the building itself.
Think energy use, materials, indoor climate and how the space works for people over time.
If a hotel has the DGNB certification, you can expect a thoughtfully built place that’s good for both you and the planet – right down to the concrete.

2. Bryggen Guldsmeden
Before we moved to Islands Brygge ourselves, we spent a few nights at Bryggen Guldsmeden between Christmas and New Year’s – and it turned out to be a perfect introduction to everyday life in this quiet, local part of Copenhagen.
Set in a former shoe factory, the hotel mixes raw industrial details with the group’s signature Nordic-Balinese design: soft lighting, natural materials and four-poster beds in every room.

The hotel is certified by Green Globe and Green Key, and practices include six-stream waste sorting as well as a focus on low-impact materials and ingredients.
We didn’t expect to use the outdoor pool in winter, but we ended up jumping in anyway – heated, clean and surrounded by twinkling lights.
Afterwards, we spent time in the sauna, steam bath and surprisingly stylish gym. It felt more like a little urban spa than a city hotel.
The location is ideal if you prefer a quieter stay outside the centre but still within easy reach.
You’re right by Amager Fælled – a wild green space great for long walks – and just a few minutes from the harbour, cafés, supermarkets and metro.

Sustainable travel tips
To minimise your impact during your visit to Copenhagen, follow these guidelines:
- Walk whenever possible. The city is compact, calm and made for pedestrians.
- Cycle like a local. Rent a bike to explore and remember to follow local etiquette on the well-designed bike lanes.
- Use public transport. It’s clean, reliable and mostly electric; no car needed.
- Eat more plant-based meals. Copenhagen has excellent vegan and vegetarian food across all budgets.
- Drink tap water. It’s safe, clean and available everywhere, so bring a refillable bottle.
- Cut down on single-use plastics. Skip lids and straws and bring your own containers, cup and bag, when possible.
- Sort your waste. Follow the bin system for recycling and composting around the city.
- Return bottles for “pant”. Use the deposit system at supermarkets to recycle bottles and cans.
- Choose low-impact activities. Swim in the harbour, visit parks, museums or go on a solar-powered boat trip in the harbour.
- Shop second-hand or local. Find vintage treasures or buy from sustainable Danish brands.
- Use eco-friendly sunscreen. Protect the harbour and canals when swimming.
- Respect urban wildlife. Don’t feed animals, keep dogs leashed and avoid littering in green spaces.
